Earth Day – Tuesday

April 18th, 2008 · No Comments · Commentary

This is a great opportunity to introduce your children to the concept of planet consciousness, respect, and nurturing. The next generation is going to have to cope with the ills some of us have visited on our planet.

The web site KABOOSE offers lots of family – oriented material and activities to involve your children in learning about our planet and how to care for it.  There are recipes, crafts, activities, and links to other sites for coloring pages and much more.  ( I apologize for the huge banner ads ).   KnowledgeHound is voluminous in the ideas and suggestions offered for the entire family.

There are lots of sites with information on natural and organic gardening.  It’s a great way to help Mother Earth as well as saving money on pesticides, etc.   Earth Easy offers this guide to household pest control.

I’ve saved the best for last.   Mother Earth News was founded in 1970 and has been a guiding light for many of us since we were toting tambourines and groovin’ on Jerry Garcia.  If by some chance you aren’t aware of it,  please take this opportunity to acquaint yourself with it.

There is also the Foxfire series of books focusing on first-person narratives and oral histories to document the lifestyle, culture, and skills in the Appalachians.  My personal copies are pretty well beaten up,  but I love to read them and slide into the back-country lifestyle of that era that most of us have never experienced.  It is a very real slice of America.  There are in all 20 books that provide an invaluable insight and exceptionally good reading about life in southern Appalachia.

One last note:   Please use this link to acquaint yourself with Henry David Thoreau – then get a copy of Walden, his reflections on simple living.
